NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - Movie Review
No Country for Old Men has my vote for one of the best films of 2007 if not THE best. It is by far one of my favorite Coen brothers films. It is a definite departure from their quirky comedic films like Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski. This movie, as all Coen films have, is full of top notch characters. Ones that you can relate to in odd ways and that rolled all together make the film such a rich tapestry of entertainment.
Josh Brolin has definitely staged a comeback as a strong actor. Tommy Lee Jones has some great scenes that are mildly humorous despite the surrounding situations. He is basically an old time cowboy type sheriff whose time has passed in the ever increasing violent society.
Javier Bardem has my vote for the scariest bad guys of the year. His demeanor is what is most chilling about him. Unlike many killers that have graced the silver screen he does not act out of anger. His violence is very calm and calculated. He strikes with such precision and deadly force and then is gone like a tumbleweed in the arid desert.
The great state of Texas should also be considered a character in this great ensemble piece. Just like Fargo had Minnesota, No Country for Old Men has Texas. I love the way that the Coen Brothers have the great ability to transport us to a time and place in the country and immerse us in the way of life there. Do not miss seeing this film, it will definitely win some awards.
